A-Line

A dress or skirt silhouette that is narrower at the top, flaring gently out to make an ‘A’ shape silhouette. Flattering on most figures in particular pear shapes.

Anarkali

The Anarkali suit is made up of a long, frock-style top and features a slim fitted bottom. The Anarkali suit varies in many different lengths and embroideries including floor-length Anarkali styles.

Asymmetric design

An asymmetric design is a garment in which one side is long than the other. Asymmetric cuts are common in necklines, collars and hems.

Asymmetric A-Line

Asymmetrical A-line is when an A-line silhouette has an uneven fall , when the two opposite sides don't match.

Art Linen

It is woven with even threads that are especially good for embroidery. It is very easy to "draw" the yarns for drawn thread work. Comes bleached, or coloured. Has a soft finish.

Antique Satin

It is typically composed of approximately 60% rayon and 40% acetate. Occasionally the warp and weft yarns are dyed different colors to give an iridescent effect.

Applique

Applique is a method of decorating garments in which one fabric is applied to another, often with floral and leaf patterns, but can be of any design and are stitched around the edged.

B

Bar Fagoting

An embroidery technique that can be worked in by hand, in a ‘bar’ effect (a crisscross design) or using a machine with fine ribbon. The purpose of the stitches are to fill the space between two finished edges.

Banarsi

A Banarasi is usually reffered as a saree made in Varanasi, a city which is also called Banaras. The sarees are among the finest sarees in India and are known for their gold and silver brocade or zari, fine silk and opulent embroidery. These are now used as fabric which are made of finely woven silk and are decorated with intricate design, and, because of these engravings, are relatively heavy.

Bandhani

A process of patterning cloth by tie-dyeing in which the design is reserved on the undyed cloth by tying small spots very tightly with thread to protect them . from the dye. Popular III Rajasthan and Gujarat.

Band Collar

A band collar is a standing band-shaped collar that encircles the neck without a full turndown or a collar "cape". It can be any height.

Balloon Sleeve

A type of full sleeve.  It is frequently made of lighter or transparent fabrics.

Band

Basque

The extension below the waistline of a fitted bodice or jacket, which flares out below the waist and is relatively short, basques may be of any length, may be fitted or full.

Batik

A fabric printed by batik, namely an Indonesian method of hand-printing textiles by coating with wax the parts not to be dyed.

Batwing Sleeves

The batwing sleeve designed from a large triangular piece of fabric that connects the shoulder to the wrist and the wrist to the waist.

Baldachin

A rich embroidered fabric of silk and gold.

Beaded

Referring to a fabric embelished with beads.

Beaded lace

A machine made lace with a row of openwork holes designed for the insertion of a decorative ribbon.

Bell Bottom

A bell sleeve is a standard sleeve that flares out from the elbow or upper arm to create a bell shape.

Bellow Pocket

A large gusseted pocket that is often featured on jackets, pants and skirts. Often seen on safari inspired garments.

Belt

A strip of flexible material worn especially around the waist

Bertha Collar

A deep flat collar that falls from neckline to shoulder opening at front or back.

Beige

A variable color averaging light grayish yellowish brown.

Bias Cut

A diagonal cut made against the grain of a fabric. Garments cut on the bias have a fluid movement and drape; following the curves of the body.

Bib Necklace

A necklace that features a large front section that is often decorated, embroidered or beaded.

Binche lace

A lace in which the lace motifs are appliqued to a machine made net ground. Orinally made in Binche Belgium.

Bishop Sleeves

A long sleeve that fullness in the sleeve and is held by cuff at wrist.

Block printed

A hand printingmethopd using wood, metal or linoleum blocks. The design is carved on the block for each colour. The dye is applied to the block, which is pressed and hammered against the fabric.

Boat Neck

A type of wide neckline on a garment that sits just below the collarbone.

Bodice

It's the close-fitting upper part of a dress, covering the chest and back above the waist.

Bolero

A woman's short open jacket

Bootleg

A style of jeans or pants that tapers to the knee and then slightly flares to the ankle. Worn by both men and women.

Bretelles

A diagonal band of fabric or trimming similar to a turned back collar or revers that runs from the center of the waist to the outer edges of the shoulders.

Brocade

Originating in the 17th Century Brocade is Italian for embossed cloth. A rich, ornate fabric with elaborate design - often reversible and featuring motifs such as flowers, foliage and scrollwork. Made with a jacquard loom.

Cape

Outer garment that hangs from the shoulders.

Cape Sleeves

Sleeves which appear to be emerging out of cape are called Cape sleeves, they can be of various lengthes and exaggerated styles, Cape sleeves are also considered to be the slits provided in cape for a better hand movement.

Chambray

"A cloth with a white weft and a coloured warp. It is a lightweight clothing fabric which gives a denim look."

Chanderi

Chanderi is a traditional ethnic fabric characterized by its lightweight, sheer texture and fine luxurious feel. Chanderi fabric is produced by weaving in silk and golden Zari in the cotton yarn that results in the creation of the shimmering texture.

A light, transparent fabric typically made of silk or nylon

Chikankari

It's a traditional embroidery style from Lucknow, India.The technique of creation of a chikan work is known as chikankari. Chikan is a delicate and artfully done hand embroidery on a variety of textile fabric like muslin, silk, chiffon, organza, net, etc. White thread is embroidered on cool, pastel shades of light muslin and cotton garments.

Churidaar Sleeves

It's a sleeve style longer than the arm and sometimes finish with a tightly fitting buttoned cuff at the wrist. The excess length falls into folds and appears like a set of bangles resting on the ankle (hence 'churidar'; 'churi': bangle, 'dar': like).

Co-ord

 It comes from the word ‘coordinates’ and means a set of matching tops (outerwear or blouses) and bottoms (pants or skirts).

Corduroy

A fabric usually made up of cotton, utilizing a cut pile weave construction. Extra sets of filling yarns are woven into fabric to form ridges of yarn on the surface. The redges are bult so that clear lines can be see when pile is cut.

Cotton

A Fabric made of cotton plant, The fiber is most often spun into yarn or thread and used to make a soft, breathable textil.

Cowl Neckline

A soft draping of fabric, cut so that the fabric can hang in soft folds. Often found on necklines and backs.

Crepe

A light, thin fabric with a wrinkled surface

A type of embroidery using a loosely twisted 2 ply worsted yarn

Crew Neck

A close-fitting round neckline usually seen on a sweater or T-shirt.

Crop Top

A woman's casual garment or undergarment for the upper body, cut short so that it reveals the stomach.

Cropped Trouser

These are trouseres which are cropped at the ankle.

Culottes

Women's short trousers that look like a skirt.

Dart

V-shaped tuck that is sewn into a garment in order to shape the fabric so that the garment fits the rounded parts of the body. Darts are most often found at the bustline, the back shoulder, the waistline, and the hipline.

Denim

True denim is a twill weave cotton like fabric made with different colour yarns in the warp and the weft. Due to the twill construction, one colour predominates on the fabric surface.

Dhoti Salwar

It's a salwar type which has drapes of a dhoti giving it a dhoti look.

Digital Print

Digital print refers to methods of printing from a digital-based image directly to a variety of media.

Drawstring

A string in the seam of the material of a garment or a bag, which can be pulled to tighten or close it.

Dupatta

A length of fabric material worn arranged in two folds over the chest and thrown back around the shoulders, typically with a salwar kameez mostly by women from South Asia

Dupion

A rough slubbed silk fabric woven from the threads.

Ease

In design of a garment ease refers to fullness incorporated into a design so that it will fit comfortably.

Embroidery

Ornamentation of a fabric by using any of a wide variety of decorative hand or machine stitches in the same or a contrasting color. Different styles of embroidery are often associated with particular geographic regions or ethnic groups.

Empire Waist

Location of the waistline just under the bustline.

Fringe

An ornamental border of threads left loose or formed into tassels or twists, used to edge clothing or material.

Frog

A decorative closure for a garment that is made from cord or braid. On one side of the area to be closed, a loop is made and on the other, a large, ornamental knot. The knot passes through the loop. This style of closing is often used in Chinese-influenced designs.

Full fitted sleeves

These reffer to our regular full length sleeves with a comfort slim fit fitting.

Gathers

A means of distributing fullness in some part of a garment by making soft folds in order to decrease the width of the fabric.

Georgette

Georgette is a sheer, lightweight, dull-finished crêpe fabric originally made from silk, Georgette is made with highly twisted yarns which is responsible for it's crinkly surface.

Gimp

A type of braid that has a heavy central core covered by a more decorative outer layer of fiber that is arranged into a design on the surface of a garment, sewn into place, and forms a raised decorative area.

Godet

Triangular piece of fabric that is inserted into the lower edge of a skirt or sleeve in order to provide additional fullness. Especially popular when fullness around the hem of a skirt.

Gharara

A pair of loose trousers with pleats below the knee, worn by women from South Asia, typically with a kameez.

Gota

Gota work is a type of Indian embroidery that originated in Rajasthan, India. It uses the applique technique. Small pieces of zari ribbon are applied onto the fabric with the edges sewn down to create elaborate patterns.

Gore

A triangular shaped fabric piece that is intended to add gradual fullness to a garment. Skirts often consist of two or more gores. They allow a closer fit over the hips and then gradually flare out at the lower part of the garment.

Hems

The lower edge of a part of a garment that has been finished off with some type of sewing to cover the raw edge.

Halter Neckline

A top for women with a single, sometimes tied strap that passes behind the back of the neck.

Jacket

An outer garment that has sleeves and covers the body from shoulder down.

Jacquard

A fabric in which the design is incorporated into the weave in golden thread instead of being printed or dyed on.

Juba

A long outer garment resembling an open coat, having long sleeves,

Jumpsuit

A Jumpsuit is a one-piece garment with sleeves and legs.

Kaftan

Kaftan is a long, loose piece of clothing with wide sleeves

Khadi Print

It is the process of printing light shades onto a white or traditionally darkened, coloured fabric.

Lehenga

It is a form of full ankle-length skirt which is long, embroidered and pleated.

Lining

A lining is an inner layer of fabric inserted into clothing

Material that stretches, used especially for making clothes that fit very tightly

Net is a kind of cloth that you can see through. It is made of very fine threads woven together so that there are small equal spaces between them.

Organza

Organza is a thin, plain weave, sheer fabric made from silk.

Pagoda Sleeves

A sleeve that is shaped much like an Asian building called a pagoda. Like a pagoda, the sleeve is narrow at the top where it fits the upper arm closely, then gradually flares out to become wide at the bottom.

Palazzo

A palazzo are long women's trousers cut with a loose, extremely wide leg that flares out from the waist.

Pallu

The end of a sari or dupatta that hangs loose when worn.

paper Taffeta

Plain Weave, very light in weight and trated to give a crisp, paper like finish.

Paisley

A tear- drop shaped, fancy printed pattern used in dresses, blouse and men's ties

Pencil Trouser

They are typically narrow fitted pants with a snug fit through the legs, ending in a small leg opening above the ankles.

Peplum

A short gathered or pleated strip of fabric attached at the waist of a woman's jacket, dress, or blouse to create a hanging frill or flounce

Petticoat

a woman's light, loose garment hanging from the waist, worn under a saree.

Placement Print

A placement print is the position of an artwork within a product.

A slit or opening in a garment that allows room for the garment to be put on. Plackets are most commonly found at the neck, the wrist, the top of a skirt, or the front of trousers. They can be finished with a hem or overlapping pieces that allow the placket to be hidden. Closures such as buttons, snaps, hooks, zippers, or Velcro are often incorporated into a placket.

Pleats

A pleat is a type of fold formed by doubling fabric back upon itself and securing it in place.

Princess Line

A garment style in which the sections of the garment are cut in one from shoulder to hem, with no waistline seam. Close body fit is achieved by cutting the pieces so that the seams create the shape and by adding darts where necessary.

Raglan Sleeves

A raglan sleeve is a sleeve that extends in one piece fully to the collar, leaving a diagonal seam from underarm to collarbone.

Rayon

A textile fibre or fabric made from regenerated cellulose.

Resham Threadwork

Resham embroidery is embroidery that is done with colored silk thread,the thread or resham is used for making complex patterns.

Round Neck

This type of neckline follows the base of your neck with a gentele curve making a circular round around your neck.

Salwar

A pair of light, loose, pleated trousers, usually tapering to a tight fit around the ankles, worn by women from South Asia typically with a kameez

Sandwash Satin

This type of satin fabric has a unique textured look and feel to it, which is obtained through the process called sandwash-This gives the soft peachskin finish by blasting a fabric with fine sand.

Satin

A smooth, glossy fabric, usually of silk, produced by a weave which gives a very luxurious look and feel to it.

Scalloping

Scalloping is a technique in which a series of curves are attached, commonly at the edge of a piece of fabric, that look the edge of a scallop shell when repeated. As a motif, scalloping is particularly popular in haute couture, on collars, hems and necklines.

Sequin

A small shiny disc sewn on to clothing for decoration.

Sharara

A pair of loose pleated trousers worn by women from South Asia, typically with a kameez and dupatta.

Shawl

A shawl is a large piece of woollen cloth which mostly worn by a woman over her shoulders or head, or which is wrapped around a baby to keep it warm.

Shibori

A method of ornamenting fabric by stitching and forming gathers in the fabric before it is dyed. After dyeing, the stitching is removed and the crinkled areas released. The areas protected from the dye by the stitching and gathering absorb the dye in irregular patterns characteristic of these fabrics.

Shift Dress

A shift dress is a simple dress in which the cloth falls straight from the shoulders and has darts around the bust for a comfart fit.

Shirt Collar

A shirt collar is a collar with crisp edges and usually has buttonholes and buttons on the points fastening it to the shirt.

Silhouette

In fashion, the overall outline, or shape of a garment.

Silk

A lustrous tough elastic fiber produced by silkworms and used for textiles.

Skater Dress

A short dress with a fitted waist and a skirt that flares into an A-line shape

A garment having no sleeves.

Straight Cut

A straight cut here is reffered to fitted dress, often nipped at the waistline with no waist seam ,The dress emphasizes the waistline giving a perfect body shape.

Taffeta

A fine lustrous silk or similar synthetic fabric with a crisp texture.

Tassels

A tuft of loosely hanging threads or cords knotted at one end and attached for decoration to soft furnishings, clothing, or other items.

Tent Style

The tent style was inspired by the tent dress, which is a dress that hangs loose from shoulder to below the hips, and does not have a waistline. They are usually worn without belts.

Tie Die

A method of decorating a garment or fabric by tieing string or other material around pre-selected areas in order to prevent dye from being absorbed by these areas.

Tuck

A means of manipulating fullness in garments by folding the fabric and sewing a row of stitching parallel to the fold. Fullness is released at the end of the stitching. Sometimes they are turned to the outside of a garment as ornamentation.

Tulip pants

The tulip pant has a forgiving silhouette – billowing on top, narrow at the ankles, and with layers of airy fabric , it comes in various styles.

Turtle neck

A high, round, close-fitting neck usually seen on a knitted garment.

Twill

Twill is a type of fabric (textile weave) with a pattern of diagonal parallel ribs,twill weave can be identified by its diagonal lines.

Umbrella sleeves

This Sleeve is called an umbrella sleevebecause it looks as round as an umbrella and it is cut and sew without any joint. This sleeve is cut fullumbrella that means without any joint, on a bias line.

V

Velvet

A closely woven fabric of silk, cotton, or nylon, that has a thick short pile on one side and has a really soft texture

V-Neck

Neckline in a garment that comes down to a point on the throat or chest, resembling the shape of the letter "V" is called a V neck.

Waist coat

A close-fitting waist-length garment, typically having no sleeves or collar and buttoning down the front, worn especially by men over a shirt and under a jacket

Wide leg trousers

Trousers that have very wide legs throughout their whole length.
